Brasil

Rio de Janeiro and Brazil are gearing up to present themselves to the world on the occasion of the Preliminary Draw for the 2014 FIFA World Cup? on 30 July 2011. The Preliminary Draw will be the first FIFA World Cup event of global magnitude on Brazilian soil related to the 2014 edition.

The Marina da Glria in Rio de Janeiro will provide the perfect setting for a show that will attract millions of viewers from all across the globe. A record audience is expected for this important milestone event marking the start of the trip to Brazil for the remaining 175 of the 203 teams participating in the qualifiers.

The draw will be a celebration of the World Cup returning to Brazil after 64 years. The 95-minute live TV broadcast (15.00 local time/20.00 CET) will be a curtain-raiser for what fans may expect in 2014 with Brazilian beats and flavours to whet the appetite. The show will be directed by Brazilian director Aloysio Legey (GEO), while the programme broadcast will be directed by Luiz Gleiser (TV Globo). A selection of famous Brazilian artists to entertain the audience will be announced by the producers shortly.

The Preliminary Draw illustrates perfectly how a FIFA World Cup can bring the world together like no other event. Delegates from approximately 100 FIFA member associations, almost 800 media representatives from all over the world, and an audience of some 2,000 people, including celebrities from the world of politics, sport and show business, are expected to attend the ceremony.

FIFA Secretary General Jrme Valcke will conduct the draws for all qualification zones other than South America, which will play its qualifiers in a league format. The draws will include guest appearances by some of the biggest names in Brazilian football ? past, present and future ? to be announced in due course.

In total, 166 participating member associations from five qualification zones ? Africa, Asia, Europe, North, Central America and the Caribbean, and Oceania ? will find out who will face whom in the bid for one of the 31 available slots at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil in June and July 2014.

This week?s Photo Friday (#FriFotos) theme is SUMMER. To me, summer means a season of shorts and flip-flops and playing on the beach. The turtle sand sculpture pictured above was taken during an early morning walk on Sanibel Island, FL.

Photo Friday: Philadelphia Italian Market Festival

Philadelphia Italian Market Festival

This week?s Photo Friday (#FriFotos) theme is FESTIVALS. Chris and I used to live only a half block from the Italian Market in Philadelphia. Each year on the second weekend of May, we always looked forward to the Italian Market Festival, where the 6+ blocks of the market would be shut off from traffic, and all the shops would set up special tables outside and serve up more specialty food than you can think of.

Philadelphia Italian Market Festival

Philadelphia Italian Market Festival

My favorites were always the roasted pig at Esposito?s and the cannolis (and everything else) at Isgro bakery.

Philadelphia Italian Market Festival

Also, I have to plug my favorite coffee shop, Anthony?s Italian Coffee House (in the background in the picture above) ? pronounced Ant-nee?s for the native South Philly residents.

The Road to Carmadeggon: The Bridge That Caused it All

Stefanie Michaels on Friday, July 15, 2011

Below you?ll find images of the bridge at Mulholland Drive from July 15, 2011 1:00pm. The final hours of the bridge intact.

July 15, 2011. The dreadful day where we Angelinos wondered what it will be.

Carmageddon is here.

The 405- forever changed. A reflection of the cities growth? Poor Cal-trans decisions? After all, what about other transportation options, right?

Will it cripple L.A.? Will it go so smoothly? Others have quipped, nah- it won?t be so bad, and ?Since the 10 freeway closure after the last earthquake went so well?? said one reporter.

All speculation aside. Los Angeles will have to come to grips with, and inevitably grumble about it to friends and family- heck even a stranger or two, that it?s happening.

After all, we?re a car culture, like it or not, and this ?freeway thing? is about to go down.

Within a couple hours speculation aside?

Carmageddon.

New Jersey ? An Unlikely Tourist Destination

Please welcome Adam from Armpitnj.com

There?s no denying it: New Jersey has a pretty bad reputation (hence the nickname ?Armpit of America?). That being said, you might think the state doesn?t offer much appeal to tourists. But I beg to differ. New Jersey is a great place to visit, full of history, character and things to do. On top of that, it?s such a small state that you can easily see the best of what New Jersey has to offer in just a couple of days. So, allow me to take you on a whirlwind tour around New Jersey.

Let?s start in New Jersey?s northeast corner (where you will arrive if you fly into Newark Liberty Airport). Just hop onto the Jersey Turnpike and head north to the M

eadowlands, where you can see the new Giants Stadium and Liberty State Park. Here you can hop on a ferry to Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty (which, despite New York?s claims, are technically part of New Jersey). You?ll also want to see Hoboken, which is the birthplace of Frank Sinatra, offers great views of the Manhattan skyline, and has plenty of spots to eat, shop, and drink.

Next, travel south to the eastern central chunk of the state and the legendary Jersey Shore. But there is a lot more to this region than that, like beautiful farmland, plenty of parks, and historic towns like Red Bank and Freehold. Still, you gotta see the shore. To avoid the MTV crowd, visit the aptly named Point Pleasant rather than Sleazeside Seaside. A little further down the shore you?ll encounter the Pine Barrens, where you can camp, kayak, or search for the Jersey Devil. If quaint towns are your thing, check out Cape May. For something more excitement, visit Atlantic City to get your gambling and/or clubbing fix.

Then head to New Jersey?s southwest corner, which is much like the southwest of the U.S. It?s pretty wide open (compared to the rest of the state, at least) and even has its own rodeo, called ?Cowtown.? Go north a little and you?ll wind up in Camden. Although not the best part of the state, Camden is home to the must-see Adventure Aquarium. Drive further north and you?ll be in central western Jersey. The main thing to see here is Princeton ? both the university and the town. Anyone with doubts about the state should just visit the Princeton campus ? it will win you over.

If seeing Princeton doesn?t convert you into a Jersey fan, then the state?s northwest corner just might. This mountainous region is great for hiking, skiing, and camping. It has amazing scenery, which just might make you forget you?re even in New Jersey!

So, all you travelers out there, I implore you to give New Jersey a chance. Though it might not be as exotic as some other places, it sure packs a lot into such a small space. And, despite it being the Armpit of America, I?m happy to call it home.

Going to Vegas: Summertime taxis

So the trip was pretty straightforward. Head to Vegas for a long weekend, meet up with friends. Drink a little, eat a little, sleep by the pool and just enjoy a long weekend. Moderation and easy living during the off season for the No. 1 tourist location that doesn’t involve roller coasters or animated characters running around and touching your kids like a TSA agent — well, that was the plan. But Las Vegas isn’t really a place for moderation, it’s all about excess. When we checked into our room at the Mirage (review to come tomorrow), it was late — maybe 10 p.m. But that’s not Vegas late, we’d quickly learn when we got back to our room at 3 a.m. (which, from what I gather, still isn’t Vegas late). So what’s Vegas like in July? It’s really frickin’ hot, that’s what it’s like. As soon as you walk through baggage claim section of the airport over toward the taxi stand (it was a little tricky for us to find) you can feel the wave of heat rising off of the sidewalk. The heat is the one constant we always faced — what with Vegas being a desert and [...]

Note to TSA: Children are not veal

I read the other day that a six-year-old boy, on the way to a surprise trip to Disneyland with his parents, was patted down twice at Sea-Tac Airport in Seattle. What?s that all about? Did the TSA personnel have such a good time patting him down initially that they wanted to go at it again? TSA?s abuse of its boss?s own edict has gone beyond ridiculous. In November of last year, John Pistole, head of TSA, said that children under 12 will no longer face pat downs in TSA security lines. Sounds simple enough, doesn?t it? Apparently not if you work for the government and you sure as hell aren?t here to help us. Explain this new procedure to the parents of an eight-month-old baby who was patted down in Kansas City. Just because Kansas City is famous as a meat packing center doesn?t give the Feds cause to look for something choice in the diaper of a baby. And what were they looking for in the underpants of this poor little six-year-old?a serrated-edged wee wee? Anytime a government agency is involved there?s no point looking for professionalism, smoothness or common sense. Its idea of fixing a problem is to [...]

Driving in LA? Don?t take the 405.

Going to be in LA on July 16 or 17th? If so, you may witness the worst car jam ever, or better yet, you may want to rethink those plans. For 53 hours, the 405 will be shut down on a 10 mile stretch between US 101 and I10. This shutdown is to demolish the Mulholland Drive overpass and can only be done with a complete closure of the highway. The bridge will be rebuilt as a longer bridge so that the 405 can be widened in order to hold more cars, which will cause people to request even more lanes, causing more construction and thus continuing the circle of traffic. Predictions are that the traffic will be backed up from 25 – 60+ miles, showing that the California DOT really has no idea what will actually happen. The work is scheduled to begin Friday at midnight, with entrance ramps to the 405 shutting down earlier in the evening and will promptly end by 5 AM Monday morning. Supposedly, all work will be done on time.
